Amidst nationwide mourning, Pujith Jayasundara, the Inspector General of Police in Sri Lanka’s, has resigned.
Jayasundara resigned over the deadly Easter bomb attacks the country’s president said Friday, according to KODIKARA.
“The IGP has resigned. He has sent his resignation to the acting defense secretary.
“I’ll nominate a new IGP soon,” President Maithripala Sirisena told reporters on Friday.
The President’s nominee for the position has to be confirmed by a constitutional council.
Hermasiri Fernando, the country’s top defense ministry official, defense secretary had earlier resigned on Thursday.
The coordinated attack, that reportedly left no fewer than 207 people dead and 400 injured was said to have targeted congregations who were taking part in Easter Sunday services at various churches.
ISIS thereafter claimed responsibility for the gruesome attack.
